Overview

About this course

The mRNA technology-based vaccines have played a pivotal role in the fight against COVID-19. Given the endemicity of COVID-19, it is essential to re-evaluate the potential role of vaccines and boosters in combating emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants considering the waning immunity. This e-learning module overviews the evolving threat of COVID-19 variants in light of the waning vaccine immunity, especially in at-risk populations, the unmet needs in vaccine development, and the safety and effectiveness of bivalent boosters.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:
  • Understand the current utility of COVID-19 booster vaccinations
  • Understand the mechanism of action of mRNA platform technology
  • Identify the potential challenges associated with COVID-19 vaccine uptake
  • Review the safety and effectiveness of bivalent COVID-19 mRNA vaccines
  • Explore the next steps for continued protection as COVID-19 transitions into an endemic phase

Topics covered

  • Mechanism of action of mRNA technology against respiratory pathogens
  • Significance of booster vaccinations
  • Global data on prevalence of new variants of concern
  • Defence mechanisms against SARS-CoV-2 infections
  • Identification of at-risk population for severe COVID-19
  • Unmet needs and potential challenges associated with COVID-19 vaccination
  • Risk of ‘long COVID’ and its association with vaccinations
  • Safety and effectiveness of bivalent mRNA vaccine boosters
  • Transitioning COVID-19 and evolving vaccination strategies
