Overview

About this course

Disability is a multifaceted concept encompassing various impairments that may limit a person's ability to perform certain activities or participate fully in the community. A person with disability (PWD) is an individual who experiences such impairments and accompanying challenges. One major challenge is limited access to essential resources for people with disabilities, including healthcare.

Accessibility is a crucial aspect of disability inclusion in healthcare. However, numerous barriers to healthcare are encountered by PWDs, hindering them from receiving timely and appropriate medical services. Additionally, many healthcare providers lack proper training in how to treat a person with disability, leading to substandard care or even avoidance of care. These barriers contribute to significant health disparities, poorer health outcomes, and reduced quality of life among PWDs.

Disability inclusivity does not only benefit PWDs but the entire community as well. The inclusion of PWDs can improve the effectiveness of disease prevention and health promotion programs. Strategies for disability-inclusive primary healthcare include improving accessibility to healthcare facilities and training healthcare professionals in disability awareness and inclusive communication. All primary care physicians should adopt the responsibility of promoting and applying disability inclusion in healthcare, ensuring that every person with disability has equal rights and access to healthcare services. These ensure personalized care for every person with disability.

This e-learning module provides a comprehensive understanding of disability and its implications in healthcare. It utilizes evidence-based strategies to overcome barriers to healthcare access, emphasizing the importance of disability education and training for healthcare professionals, and fostering patient-centered care. Through these, a more equitable healthcare system may be created, valuing the health and dignity of every individual, regardless of their disabilities.
