Overview
Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is a common disease affecting all ages and genders worldwide, with
increasing prevalence in developing countries in Asia. It typically presents with heartburn and acid reflux
or regurgitation and can sometimes present as other troublesome extraesophageal symptoms. Some patients with
GERD can have mild and intermittent symptoms; others, however, can experience a poor quality of life due to
its symptoms.
This e-learning module discusses the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of
GERD, highlighting the alarm features to watch out for, lifestyle interventions that can be advised on top
of medical treatment, and a new drug class in the pharmacologic management of GERD.
