Overview

About

The renin-angiotensin aldosterone system is the therapeutic of first-line antihypertensive medications angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and the angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Comparison of the effects of these drugs on various clinical parameters will be the focus of the discussions in this course. The two lectures in this module will cover Weighing the Evidence in Hupertension and How We Can Explain the Differences Between ACEi and ARB: Focus on Pathophysiology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the importance of blood pressure lowering , appropriate targets and evidence for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)
  2. Differentiate ACEi and ARB based on pharmacokinetic differences and clinical trial evidence
  3. Evaluate the evidence for ACEi and ARBs in reducing all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension
  4. Explain the role of combination therapy in patients with hypertension
  5. Explain the differences in pathophysiology og ACEi and ARB on angiotensin II receptors, bradykinin and nitric oxide production
  6. Discuss the evidence for ACEi and ARB on endothelium function, fibrinolysis and cardiac protection

Topics covered:

  1. Fact check on BP targets if lower is better
  2. Fact check evidence on ACEi in reducing CV events among patients with hypertension
  3. Fact check whether combination therapy is indicated for most patients
  4. Fact check whether ARBs and ACEi have different effects on endothelium functions.
  5. Fact check whether ACEi and ARBs affect fibrinolysis differently
  6. Fact check whether ACEi and statinss have a synergistic effect on atherosclerosis.
