About this course

Dietary supplements are products developed to supplement one’s diet by providing nutrients that may be lacking in an individual’s daily nutritional intake. They come in various substances such as herbs, amino acids, enzymes, and probiotics. The goal of dietary supplements is to aid overall health and well-being by enhancing nutrient intake and preventing deficiencies. These products have become an essential component of healthcare, with a significant number of the population utilizing it for nutritional support and health improvement. As its use increases, pharmacists, who are often at the forefront of healthcare, play a crucial role in guiding patients with its safe and effective use.

Pharmacists have the pivotal opportunity to educate patients about the advantages and disadvantages of dietary supplements. Although supplements are widely available over the counter and are often perceived as safe, they come with inherent risks. Misuse or unsuitable combinations can result in adverse effects, drug interactions, or toxicities. One of the roles of pharmacists is to assess the patients’ supplement needs based on their existing health conditions, medications, and lifestyle. By staying informed with current evidence and regulations regarding dietary supplements, pharmacists can offer evidence-based advice to patients, ensuring the proper use of supplements.

This e-learning module discusses the various types of supplements, their potential benefits and risks, the latest scientific evidence, and the available regulatory frameworks. In addition, the module emphasizes the essential role of pharmacists in providing patient education, preventing drug interactions and promoting safe use of supplements such as vitamins and minerals.
