Overview

About this course

This CME module guides participants through methods for differentiating between viral and bacterial infections, emphasising the importance of point-of-care testing (POCT) and the principles of antimicrobial stewardship. Participants will learn of valuable clinical recommendations, understand the healthcare and economic burdens associated with viral respiratory tract infections (RTIs) such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus, as well as its associated risks. Lastly, the module explores the real-world effectiveness and profound significance of influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunisation.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Understand the role of POCT in effective clinical management and antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Recognise risks associated with viral and bacterial co-infections, evaluate comorbidities, and identify risk factors for severe disease.
  • Follow treatment guidelines for the effective management of viral RTIs.
  • Review the real-world effectiveness of vaccines in reducing morbidity and mortality associated with viral RTIs.

Topics covered

  • Diagnosis and differentiation of viral and bacterial RTIs
  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Severity and burden of viral infections (SARS-CoV-2, influenza, RSV) and risk factors for severe disease
  • Treatment guidelines for the effective management of viral RTIs
  • Real-world effectiveness and significance of vaccines
