Overview
Childhood and adolescent obesity has become a significant public health concern worldwide, with increasing prevalence over the past few decades. As a chronic disease, obesity is associated with multisystem complications and mental health conditions. Childhood and adolescent obesity, along with its related complications, can persist into adulthood, setting the stage for the development of other chronic diseases and increasing the risk of premature mortality. This highlights the critical need for early intervention for pediatric obesity.
The diagnosis of pediatric obesity is based on its accurate and early identification, often starting with routine screenings. Screening and diagnostic tools for pediatric obesity involve calculating the body mass index (BMI) and plotting it on age- and sex-specific growth charts. Evaluation of comorbidities is essential, as it plays a crucial role in determining tailored treatment plans for the patient.
Effective management of childhood and adolescent obesity requires a child-focused, family-centered, and coordinated life-course approach to care. Evidence-based strategies include specific health behavior recommendations for pediatric obesity as the cornerstone of treatment. Pharmacological interventions and pediatric bariatric surgery are typically reserved for cases of severe obesity or obesity-related complications, which warrant referral to specialists.
This e-learning module equips primary care physicians with the necessary resources to identify, diagnose, and manage childhood and adolescent obesity, improving outcomes for pediatric patients and reducing long-term obesity-related health risks.
