Overview

About

Obesity, characterized by excessive body fat that impairs health, is a major modifiable risk factor in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Its rising global and regional prevalence has closely mirrored the growing burden of CVD, making obesity-related cardiovascular disease an increasingly important focus in clinical practice. Timely intervention of obesity in CVD offers an opportunity not only to improve cardiovascular outcomes but also to address a wide range of comorbidities linked to excess weight.

The relationship between increased adiposity and CVD is complex and multifactorial, involving both direct and indirect mechanisms. Excess fat accumulation contributes to systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. These changes promote atherogenesis, elevate blood pressure, disrupt lipid metabolism, and lead to structural and functional alterations in the heart, thus influencing CVD pathophysiology.

Managing obesity involves a comprehensive medical approach focused on achieving individualized goals for weight reduction and enhanced quality of life. Even modest reductions in body weight (5 to 10%) can yield substantial weight loss benefits, including improved blood pressure, glucose control, and lipid levels. Therefore, it is essential for physicians to be familiar with non-pharmacologic, pharmacologic, and surgical interventions for weight management. Understanding the specific indications, benefits, and limitations of each option supports personalized, evidence-based care that enhances weight loss outcomes and reduces cardiovascular risk.

This e-learning module provides an overview of the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular disease, along with practical strategies for effective weight management. By outlining the indications for various interventions, it supports timely, individualized care to improve cardiovascular outcomes and overall health.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, learners should be able to:

  • Define and classify obesity.
  • Describe the prevalence of obesity in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • Emphasize obesity as a major modifiable risk factor for CVD and its impact on specific CVD manifestations.
  • Identify evidence-based lifestyle interventions for weight management in patients with CVD.
  • Evaluate the role of pharmacologic therapies in the management of obesity in patients with established CVD.
  • Discuss the benefits and risks of intragastric and surgical interventions for obesity in the context of CVD.
  • Recognize the emotional and mental toll of breaking bad news on healthcare providers and implement appropriate coping strategies.
