Overview

About

Occupational health is a vital yet often under-recognised field that sits at the intersection of healthcare, workplace safety, and organisational performance. This self-development module provides a comprehensive and experience-based introduction to the profession of occupational health doctors and the essential role they play in safeguarding worker wellbeing while supporting business sustainability.

At the heart of this course are the lived experiences of two occupational health doctors who share their professional journeys, day-to-day responsibilities, and the realities of practising occupational health across diverse work environments. Through their reflections, learners will gain a deeper understanding of how occupational health extends beyond clinical.

To provide a well-rounded perspective, this module also features insights from both company and worker viewpoints. From the organisational side, learners will explore how effective occupational health strategies contribute to safer workplaces, improved productivity, and stronger employee engagement. From the worker's perspective, the course emphasises the importance of access to occupational health services in promoting safety, dignity, trust, and long-term health at work.

This course encourages reflection on the collaborative relationship between employers, employees, and occupational health professionals. It aims to build awareness of the occupational health doctor’s role as a trusted advisor and mediator who balances medical ethics, workplace demands, and employee wellbeing.

We hope this module helps healthcare professionals with an interest in workplace health and safety who wish to broaden their understanding of occupational health practice. By the end of the course, learners will have gained practical insights into the value of occupational health and a clearer appreciation of its impact on both individual workers and organisations.
