About
Oral health is a fundamental component of overall health, yet it is often overlooked in routine primary care. In Thailand, where patients frequently consult primary care physicians (PCPs) in both public and private healthcare settings, PCPs are well positioned to identify oral health concerns and guide patients toward appropriate care. Integrating oral health in primary care enables early identification of risks, prevention and management of common oral diseases, and timely referral to dental specialists.
Dental caries, periodontal diseases, and other oral conditions remain highly prevalent and continue to affect individuals across different age groups in Thailand. As a result, these conditions cause pain, infection, and reduced quality of life. Evidence also highlights strong links between oral diseases and systemic health, with poor oral hygiene associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Understanding these connections allows PCPs to adopt a holistic approach that addresses both oral and systemic health needs.
To effectively incorporate oral health in primary care, PCPs should be familiar with basic dental anatomy and be able to recognize common dental infections and periodontal diseases. Routine oral screening during consultations enables early detection and referral of oral conditions and, importantly, provides access to preventive oral care. By educating patients on oral hygiene, dietary habits, and fluoride use, PCPs empower individuals to maintain oral health while reducing systemic risks.
This e-learning module equips PCPs with the knowledge and practical strategies to integrate oral health in primary care. By routinely assessing oral health and applying preventive care, physicians can improve patient outcomes, reduce complications, and enhance quality of life.
