Health literacy is the ability to access, understand, and apply health information. It is a cornerstone of effective healthcare delivery. Yet, studies consistently show that many patients struggle to interpret medication labels, dosing instructions, and medical advice. This gap in understanding can lead to poor adherence, medication errors, and preventable adverse outcomes.
As one of the most accessible healthcare professionals, the community pharmacist plays a vital role in bridging this gap and ensuring patients fully comprehend their treatment plans.
This course explores the concept of health literacy from a pharmacist’s perspective, focusing on its direct impact on medication safety, patient outcomes, and healthcare efficiency. Pharmacists are often the last point of contact before a patient begins a therapy, placing them in a powerful position to identify and address misunderstandings about medications and health conditions.
By improving their communication skills and adopting patient-centred counselling techniques, pharmacists can make a meaningful difference in the health literacy of their communities.
Ultimately, this course aims to strengthen the pharmacist’s role as an educator, advocate, and communicator. By integrating health literacy principles into daily practice, community pharmacists can enhance the quality of care, empower patients to take charge of their health, and support safer medication use.
